A groundbreaking initiative of the Biden-Harris administration is set to enrich the AI security landscape radically.Â
The Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, heralded the advent of a first-of-its-kind consortium, fervently championing the cause of AI safety.Â
This pioneering coalition, the AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), is launched under the robust framework of the U.S. AI Safety Institute (USAISI).
Changing the Course of AI Safety
Capitalizing on an unprecedented collaborative spirit, the consortium is purposed to pull together AI stakeholders from diverse arenas.Â
Its ranks will be bolstered by pioneering AI designers and users, government and industry researchers, academia, and the steadfast advocates from civil society organizations.
This comes as a concrete step towards realizing essential facets of President Biden’s landmark Executive Order, encompassing the creation of red-teaming guidelines, capability assessments, risk management strategies, and safety-security policies.

Unparalleled Collaboration for Transformational Outcomes
Comprising more than 200 partners, the AISIC encomium includes the nation’s largest businesses, cutting-edge startups, and diligent academic and civil society outfits currently spearheading our understanding of AI’s transformative potential.Â
The alliance now stands as the most significant congregation of test and evaluation squads aiming to establish an entirely new measurement science rooted in AI safety.
Additionally, AISIC encompasses state and local governments, and mission-driven non-profits, fortifying its intent to collaborate on a global scale for crafting interoperable safety tools meeting international standards.
Director Laurie E. Locascio of NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) shed light on the consortium’s intent during a press briefing, “AI is moving the world into very new territory. We need to understand its capabilities, its limitations, its impacts.Â
That is why NIST brings together these incredible collaborations of representatives from industry, academia, civil society and the government, all coming together to tackle challenges that are of national importance.”

Looking beyond the Horizon
The ambitious undertaking by AISIC is not merely a promise of safer AI practices.Â
It is an invitation to every stakeholder in the new world being sculpted by AI to participate and contribute to a future where AI is not just powerful, but more importantly, also safe and trustworthy.
It represents the potential for radical shifts in the AI landscape, bringing with it the chance for the United States to lead in setting globally recognized standards for AI safety.Â
Most importantly, AISIC signals a commitment by the US government to proactive action in the face of rapid technological change, demonstrating the kind of leadership critical in an era where the stakes are increasingly high.
In the coming months, it will be intriguing to observe how AISIC’s efforts unfold and the impact they may have on the global stage.Â
While the specific initiatives and milestones are yet to be outlined, the direction is clear. The consortium is poised to embark on a journey that could fundamentally alter the status quo of AI safety and security.
Thus, AISIC opens a new chapter in the story of AI—a narrative of combined efforts that aim to ensure that as we move into uncharted territories of technological advances, we do not merely survive but thrive in a world powered by artificial intelligence.
